8 Reasons You Should Embrace Change

Change: the act or instance of making or becoming different.

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

-The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Dan Millman

The process in that quote can be really hard, there is no getting around that…

or is there?

We have comfort zones because they’re just that…comfortable. But nothing lasts forever (thank goodness) and inevitably something happens and we are moved out of said comfort zone. Sometimes it’s smoothly and sometimes it’s like ripping your tongue off a frozen ski lift. This is just the way the impermanence of life works, it’s unavoidable. Some of these changes are good and welcomed like Christmas morning and some are as welcome as stubbing your toe in the middle of the night.

The reality of every type of change is that it’s all good. It might not feel good at the time but when the uncomfortableness subsides life is always better. The trick is to embrace the change and flow with the current, not swim upstream.

I know, I know… It’s MUCH easier said than done.

It would take great strength to act this way all the time, it’s really not possible. But you can soften the blow and shorten the time spent in resistance by letting go of the perceived control of the situation and mindfully shifting your focus to what’s next.

When I had to finally stop drinking and admit that I was an alcoholic that change was, most definitely not an easy one. As terrible as I knew my life was it was comfortably uncomfortable. I knew change had to made

When I had to finally stop drinking and admit that I was an alcoholic that change was, most definitely not an easy one. As terrible as I knew my life was it was comfortably uncomfortable. I knew change had to made though. Once I took the steps and stopped resisting, it all happened very quickly.

Like any new habit, embracing change takes some practice.

Below is a list of 8 reasons why change is actually, always, a great thing.

  1. Personal growth
Every time something changes you grow, learn and get better in some way. You discover new insights about different aspects of your life. You learn lessons even from changes that did not lead you to where you thought you wanted to be.
  2. Mindfulness
We have a tendency to do things in our life pretty mindlessly. Things like eating, driving, even our jobs sometimes. Change can come in and knock you off of your proverbial rocker. It can be a wakeup call to start living more mindfully.
  3. Take Action
Without change, there’d be no improvements. There are always things in our lives, big or small, that could use some improvement. It could be your exercise routine, your diet, your career or your golf game. The about this is that nothing improves by itself. To get in better shape you have to workout, to get better at golf you have to practice. To make these improvements happen you need to take action, to do something differently or completely new.
  4. Re-evaluate Values
Change makes you look at things in your life from a different perspective. This new perspective can prove that you’re actually on the right course or it gives you the opportunity to course correct.
  5. Start Small
Small changes are extremely valuable. Sometimes big, drastic changes can be overwhelming. If you are open to changing one smaller thing at a time then the big change will seem less scary.
  6. Strength
Hard truth alert: change does not always lead to butterflies, rainbows and cupcakes. Overcoming a tough period will only make you stronger. So far your 100% on getting through hard times. All these tough experiences are bicep curls for your spirit and your soul.
  7. Create Progress
Progress is what keeps the world going and the same goes for you. In order to move forward and develop progress is a must. Without change there is no progress. We all strive to be the best we can be and this requires change.
  8. New Opportunities
The beautiful, and hard (but more beautiful), thing about change is that you never know what is on the other side of it. It could be the most unbelievable experience of your life. Change brings with it new possibilities for happiness, connections and opportunities.

So next time you are presented with a change and you immediately go into resistance mode take a step back, breath, and see if it’s actually something worth embracing. Ask yourself: Is the pain of staying the same greater than the pain of change.

Is there something amazing waiting for you on the other side of change?
